I was given this case nearly 70 years ago when leaving The Foundling Hospital School. The contents included a suit, sports jacket, flannels, shirts, under-linen, bible and prayer book. In those days you needed clothing coupons.
The case has served me well over the years – squished, squashed and sat upon to get the extra item in. Then wheels came on the scene and it was downgraded to a repository for Christmas decorations and stuffed in the attic. The Grand children are now grown up and the case and its contents were destined for the dump. Then unexpectedly I have become a Great Grandparent, so now it’s a case of hang on a minute, let’s wait and see.
I sometimes wonder what might have been were it not for the intervention of the children’s charity.
The Foundling Museum 40 Brunswick Square is an interesting place to visit for single mums feeling hard done by.
